A new breed of Indians aren’t afraid to take the road head-on for an unforgettable holiday
Five years ago, if you asked an Indian family about their ideal international holiday, they’d point you to the package tour operators. What could be more comfortable than having tour guides bus you around, helpfully pointing out the sights while you chomp on familiar home food? But that’s all set to get a serious shakeup. There’s a new breed of Indians out there and they’re hitting the road hard, driving impossible distances, giving us all #holidaygoals, and, more importantly, teaching us that there’s more to travel than just packing bags and getting on a flight.
The changing outlook towards travel and the tendency to see holidays as “real and offbeat experiences” rather than shopping and sightseeing have contributed to the popularity of road trips. They’re spontaneous, fun, they can be customized, and they let you experience the culture, nature and history of the route – all at your own pace. The availability of high-end vehicles, improved highways and better infrastructure have driven their popularity, and road trips, be it Leh to Manali or Bengaluru to Varkala, are on many to-do lists.
